ANNIE HARVEY

Anne Elizabeth Hounchell-Harvey was born on January 2, 1960 in Louisville, Kentucky and grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. She came from a very musical family. Her father, Dr. Robert Hounchell, was the head of the Vocal Music Department at Indiana State where she attended college. Her mother, Jacqueline, played the organ and taught piano. Her old brother, Robert, mastered the cello and her sister, Jeanne,also became a fine singer.

Growing up in the heartland, Anne had a deep love for bluegrass and country music. She began writing songs in high school and during her college years performed many times at Bill Monroe’s Bean Blossom Festival. In 1979, her band signed with Triad Artists and began touring the bluegrass circuit where they opened for Doc Watson, J.D. Crowe, Seldom Scene and several others.  After graduating with a degree in Theatre (she was a member of Theta Alpha Phi, a national honorary For Theatre Arts), Anne moved to Los Angeles where she met her husband, Marshall Harvey, a film editor. She began performing at various LA clubs including the Palamino, Ronnie Mack’s “Barndance”, McCabe’s Guitar Shop, Luna Park, Jack’s Sugar Shack and the Anti-Club.

Throughout the Eighties and Nineties, Anne played with many of the best country musicians in the LA area, many of whom are featured on her 2 CD set.  Bassist Bill Bryson (from the Desert Rose Band), fiddler Brantley Kearns (Dwight Yokum Band), guitarist and mandolin player Dick Fegy(the David Bromberg Trio) were regulars. Anne, Dick and Brantley often performed as the “Po No Mo” trio. Other musicians include Colin Cameron on bass, David Jackson on accordion, guitarists Tony Gilkyson and Greg Leisz, and harmony vocalist Melissa Brown-Muckart. She sang on local radio programs (KPCC’s “CityBilly” and KPFK’s “Folkscene”) and at 1993’s Troubadours of Folk Music Festival along side her idols, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and Leon Redbone.

Anne was featured on the “Town Outside of Bakersfield” vol. 2 album singing “Mr. Love” with Re Winkler and Ree Van Vleck for producer Pete Anderson.  A few of her songs have been used in television movies on Lifetime and Hallmark channels. All of her original songs are published by Black Dog 440 Music BMI. Anne also acted in local theatre productions of “A Streetcar Named Desire” (Blanche), “Nunsense”, “The Skin of our Teeth” (Lily), “The Rimers of  Eldritch” (Patsy) among others. Her only daughter, Katharine, was born in 1986 and has become an award-winning visual artist.

 Anne’s songs range from traditional country (“True Love”) and rockabilly(“Long Way from Home”) to smooth jazz (“Pieces of Me”) and sentimental love songs (“Kiss The Moon”, “Dance with You”). Her evocative lyrics tell stories of hope (“Wallflower”), lost love (“Long Gone By”), and childhoodmemories (“Uncle Dan”, “Louisville”).
